Tom Onslow-Cole will ascend the world-famous hill climb Pike’s Peak this June, as he has been invited by PureDrive Automotive to drive the Jannarelly Design-1 “OSC” sportscar in the Dubai-based brand’s debut at the Colorado event.

The multi-year plan to conquer the mountain begins with the Rockstar Energy Drink Athlete driving the 3.5-litre V6, 310bhp car ahead of the competition to ‘sweep’ the roads as the Official Safety Car, and, although he is delighted to be driving the mountain for the first time, is a little relieved it’s not in competition in his debut year.

“Pike’s Peak is a bucket list event for many drivers but you can’t just turn-up and race without huge preparation,” he explained. “Although I’d love to be racing it competitively, I’m kind of relieved I get to learn the track in this capacity before we go back and aim for prizes next year.”

OC will drive the 19.98-km long mountain road ahead of each competitive running and then lead the parade of cars back down to the base. The course is known for it’s sweeping corners that scale the mountain with a large, and at times sheer, drop to the side.

“I’m hoping that, although it’s a course car, I’ll get to hoon it a little! The Jannarelly is a serious bit of kit and I’d love to put it through its paces… all within a safe distance of the cliff face, of course!” he laughed.

Although best known for his championship-winning GT career; seven years of British Touring Car Championship exploits; and even a World RallyX Lites podium, this won’t be OC’s first hill climb event. In 2013, the Milltek Sport supported star raced the hydrogen-powered Aston Martin Rapide S at Shelsley Walsh, one of the UK’s leading hill climb events.

“I just love driving cars,” OC concluded. “Although my main focus is GT racing, it’s great to have been invited to get involved in something so exciting and I can’t wait to get going. I can’t wait to work with the PureDrive team, hopefully it’ll become an annual event for us.”

Pike’s Peak takes place over the weekend of 22-24 June but OC will head to Colorado on 18th June to get a few practice runs before the event kicks off. Follow OC on social media by searching @tomonslowcole
